Vallarpadam Perunnal
On 24 September, 2009
St.Mary, the patron of the Church, is affectionately called Vallarpadath Amma (mother of Vallarpadam) by devotees here. She is the patron saint of sailors and fisher folk and is believed to possess miraculous powers to save her devotees from dangers of the sea. This Catholic Church stands on a small island near Ernakulam amidst the picturesque backwaters encircling the Kochi harbour.
The church is believed to have been established in 1676 by the Portuguese. The annual feast here lasts more than a week. A fair is organized here during the perunal (feast) days where country boats, crafts and straw mats are the main items for sale.
